What do sunflower seeds do for birds?
Sunflower seeds are very nutritious to all types of birds, excluding of course, the tiny Hummingbird who cannot digest them. The seeds are richly filled with iron and potassium, magnesium, zinc and several vitamins such as A, B, C, D, E and minerals
My chickens favorite snack are the black oil sunflower seeds, however, too much is neither good for chickens or birds, because of the very high fat content that could cause severe liver issues. Plus these particular seeds seem to give the birds an extreme push of energy and could in some case of overdose kill the poor fellows. So as with all things in life, moderation is key.
If you can afford it, purchase any sunflower seed without the husk, some of the little ones can’t open them and get to the good stuff inside. Just make sure that the seeds are not salted it wouldn’t be good for the birds.
If you purchase a larger amount of seeds be sure to store them properly in a cooler room otherwise you begin growing new sunflowers in the bag or if too much air gets inside the bag they could possibly go rancid.
