FAQ's

What are two types of incubation?

Egg-laying animals like chickens sit on their eggs to keep them warm until they hatch. This is called "incubation." The word comes from the Latin word for "egg," which is "ovum." Still Air Incubators and Circulated Air Incubators are forced air or built in fans to circulate the air for oxygen and temperature.

What are the parts of incubator?

Humidity control is very important, air circulation fan, structure or container, a thermostat for the heat and a hygrometer for the humidity, some have an egg turner, which helps a lot and safes time, and others have even a built in candler to check on embryo development.

Does an incubator need ventilation?

Absolutely, ventilation is essential during the hatching process. Oxygen enters through the egg shell and carbon dioxide leaves the same way. The chick must have oxygen!

What is the function of water in an incubator?

Water helps to keep the humidity at a certain level, as well as, the temperature to prevent the chick to get stuck on the membrane.

Where is the best place to put an incubator?

A spare bedroom or any room or shed that is not prone to severe temperature fluctuations or excessive drafts. The temperature and humidity of the room housing the incubator should be controlled and stable. * Place the incubator in a stable environment, free of drafts and away from direct sunlight.

Can I open incubator during hatching?

It is not recommended, at least not during the last three days during lock down when the chicks start showing signs of life. They can actually hear you since day 12.

How do you have a successful hatch?

Make sure you have fertilized eggs. Collect only 7 days for optimal freshness in an egg carton with the larger, round side up where the air bubble is located and place the carton in an area where you can keep the temperature at around 65 degrees and fairly humidity around 75 percent.

Do not wash the eggs at all, if very dirty only wipe off gently what you can with a dry cloth. Date all eggs with a pencil, and put an X on one side and an O on the other so you will know which ones you have turned already.

Hopefully, you will purchase one of our suggested incubators with an automatic egg turner. Life saver, because the eggs need to be turned at least 4 times, I used to do it 6 am, noon, 6 pm, midnight. A chicken actually turns her eggs 50 times per day. So please take it seriously. It is best to begin a journal to keep track of everything!

How much does an egg incubator cost?

It all depends on your needs, egg turner, built in candler, etc. how many eggs you need to hatch etc. But they begin around $50 to $150 average.

What are the ideal temperature and humidity levels for incubation?

Around 50 humidity, the last three days 70 percent. The temperature should be without egg turner 103.5 degrees but if in egg turner the eggs need only 99.5. However, if you don't want rooster, and let me tell you, 90% of the time you will have over 50% roosters, than keep the temperature half a degree warmer, most male embryos can't handle the heat.

I like it that way, because it is much easier to through out an egg than bringing up a chick that turns out to be a rooster that you fed, loved and cared for several months and then have to re-home him.

What happens if eggs are not turned?

The yolk will stick to the wall of the egg the membrane and the embryo will die.

What happens if the temperature drops?

No worries, don't freak out. Broody hens leave their nest sometimes for quite a while and everything is fine. Once, my hen Frizzy, move a whole day to the nest next to hers and sat on the freshly laid eggs, so I simply put her back on her cold feeling eggs and they still hatched. I had several electricity outages due to storms and just covered them up really well and everything was fine.

But if you are concerned, simply grab the incubator and go the a friend's house with electricity and plug it in there until you can safely return. Eggs are tougher than we think. Let nature take its course and never assist a chick that has trouble hatching, it is simply meant to be that way, it is not strong enough and will die a couple of days later anyway. Please believe me, it is much harder on your soul later.

Benefits:

  • No egg turning four times per day by hand
  • No worries about temperature
  • No concerns regarding humidity
  • Higher hatching rate
  • Easy use
  • Easy clean-up
  • Great Visibility

Concerns:

  • Electricity outages for longer periods (battery back up is great to have, or go to neighbor to plug in the incubator)
