We bought the chicks and they are tucked away in a brooder, now what? Well if you are anything like I was starting out you are probably wondering what to do next? I am usually a planner to the "T" and made few decisions without thinking too much ahead as you definitely do with chicks.
From feed to the coop, the waterer, the medicine or first aid kit, to finally the nesting boxes and here we are with much better solutions than I could come up with on a dime at the time. I used simply crates and tubs and put would bars in front of it, but it is not the perfect solution at all because they go on top of it and poop between and all around so I had to come up with a better idea and here it is.

If you wish to do a DIY nesting box, here is a sample! Only I would not tape it flat I would leave it like a tent so that the chickens can't sit and poop on top of the box.
This was one of my tubs I used as a nesting box, the only problem it was a big too big so that I had two to three hens at the same time in their and on occasions having a hissy fit.
The tubs were so big that I could fit in a crate as well, which I did and this is the result.
I hope you enjoyed my selections and found just the perfect one for your hens and their coop. No matter what you will select they will always find a reason to cluck over which nest is in this week. Go figure.
Shelves would make a great nesting arena as well. An old cupboard, dresser, bookshelves, check out Facebook free stuff, your local paper, Craigslist, or stop by your local dump site and see what furniture people throw away? Often times you will find treasures that is perfect to create a chicken paradise!
