The reason I post this page is because I do not want you to suffer as I have when I first started out years ago. The pain I felt watching my poor chicks suffer horrible deaths was unbearable and I still find myself tearing up thinking about those days.
When we first begin keeping chickens we have no idea how many illnesses chickens can suffer and die from. So it is best you are prepared and know you cannot safe all of them. Think about a nice area on your property where you wish to bury your lost souls in the next years to come. I am not trying to discourage you, it is just a fact of a chicken farmer's life.
Below I have added the essentials for first aid you can give to your flock, but know that it is always best to have an Avian Vet's tel. and address handy for a quick visit and a back-up Vet. Things can go south rather quickly with chickens, an hour can make a difference between life or death.
I am not a Vet, just an experienced chicken keeper myself and have treated my own chickens with the products you will see below. Always best to check with a Vet.
- Important to have for wounds is Vetericyn, an utmost must have right away.
- If it is probably the respiratory issue, the VetRX.
- Eye issues happen rather often, Terramicyn.
- If stool is bloody and the chick is lethargic, most use Corid, I have, just make sure you don't give it any vitamins at the same time or its useless.
- Epsom Salt for eggbound chickens or Bumblefoot, a soak is always helpful
- Syringes to feed the week
- Aspirin for pain (regular)
- If the chicken has a broken beak or nails use Styptic Powder
- Tweezers for Bumblefoot etc.
- Scissors to cut bandages etc.
- Some kind of dog or bird nail clippers for trimming toe nails or beaks
- Disposable gloves, bumblefoot is a staph infection so we must be very careful
- Superglue for broken beaks
- Nexcare waterproof tape
- Ultraviolet Flashlight to detect creepy crawling insects on chickens and coop
The above items are a must have in your first aid kit to safe your chicken or at least to increase its chances to survive before having a chance to see the vet.
It is understandable that all together might be a bit overwhelming preparing yourself of possibilities, but believe me, you will cry your eyes out if your chicken will parish only because you did not have one or the other item above.
If you cannot afford to purchase all at once, find a chicken friend in your neighborhood that might be able to help you until you can get every months another item until your kit is complete.
To prevent the worst:
- If you want hens for eggs - only feed layer feed and in a separate dish oyster shells - No treats or scratch. The layer feed is perfectly balanced all else will offset it and you might not have eggs or strange looking once.
- If you want meat birds feed meat feed that is high in protein.
- If you have chicks to start out, only feed non-medicated feed 16 weeks!!!!!
- TO ALL THE FLOCK - NEVER FEED GRAINS! ESPECIALLY, NOT OATS!
- The first year chickens do not molt!
- If you want chicks - you must have a rooster to fertilize the eggs
- The rooster should be at least 8 months old before collecting eggs for hatching
- Join chicken groups on Facebook to make friends in your neck of the woods
- Protect your chickens from predators - less wounds to fix or to bury
- In the winter - no added heat in the coop, must be well ventilated or if moisture from the heat collects on comb and waddles it will get frostbites and could die in severe cases.
- Keep coop free from poop, dust, absolutely no feeding in coop!
- Check monthly for mites or lice at night with a ultraviolet flashlight
