There is so much joy in raising chickens and their popularity is growing steadily, not just for the amazing pleasure they provide us with their friendship, but with their eggs or meat in some cases. Survival in hard times is a very important reason why so many more people are starting to have chickens.
Yes, at first the children see the cute little chicks and want one and boom, everybody in the family is hooked! After all is settled and done, things have a sort of normalcy (nothing is ever normal with chickens) routine in your chicken keepers life, and it is time to think, hmmmm, maybe I should decorate the coop a little?
Some of us may not have a natural talent to decorate as have professional interior decorators, however, I have a neck for color coordination and I will give you some ideas on how to make your coop look prettier.
But first we must ask a couple of questions ok?
- Do you already have a coop?
2. Are you planning on buying a coop? If so, what color will it be?
3. What is your budget for the coop or decorations?
4. Do you have a run already attached to your coop?
5. What is your favorite color for the inside of your coop or outside?
6. Do you prefer metal, wood, ceramic as your coop or run decoration?
A. Most important is not to put anything into your coop that is hard for you to reach to clean!
Larger Pooper Scooper - Durable & Sturdy Rake, Spade, Tray Set with Long Handle Great for Large Small and Multi Dogs - Poop Scoop No Bend Down Easy to Use for Yard Grass Gravel Dirt
X-TECOKIT - $25.99
B. Light is very beautiful and useful, however, flies and mosquitos love them even more and will join the party every day and soil the bulbs and its surroundings for your to keep clean and will bite your babies, as well as you. So I found the one below that is easier to clean and the birds can't sit on it they will slip off it.
Solar Light Outdoor Indoor, HAOYISHU Double Control Solar Shed Light with 3 Color 4 Brightness Modes, Upgraded 24-LEDs Stainless Steel Solar Powered Pendant Lights for Shed Garage Chicken Coop Gazebo
HAOYISHU - $34.98
C. What would be pretty and useful would be some wild growing greens such as Purslane, Bee Balm, Dandelion, Plantain, Clover, Chickweed, Shepard's Needles that you put into some pots around the coop or in the run that looks pretty and the chickens and you can actually eat.
D. If you have a window, curtains would look really pretty, just keep in mind that your feathered friends might like them to and will find out what they are and try to hang on the them?
Barnyard Window Curtain Valance, 58 in x 14 in, Taupe
Achim Home Furnishings - $7.99
But what would really be nice would be little curtains you can hang from the top of the nest in diagonal shape so the hens will have a bit more privacy and feel more secure and mom is happy with the warm environment with her favorite color. Just remember that the flock cannot sit on top or they will poop on the pretty little curtains, but if you don't mind after a while just wash them or create new ones.
E. Wooden Art is gorgeous and will look so pretty in a farm setting, however, if not treated it could attract terminates, so be careful to find the perfect one.
Vintage Golden Rooster Wood Art Plaque Daisy Retro Rooster Garden Farm Since 1975 Wood Wall Art Sign Chicken Coop Décor Rooster Wood Signs Kitchen Laundry Room Wall Décor 16x16in
GENERIC - $29.99
F. A mirror is a must have in a coop for the chickens to have some fun, just make sure it is extremely well secured and the chickens can see themselves easily as well as yourself! Also, if the flock gets to rowdy could they break it? Perhaps, Plexiglas or a metal mirror, or the one below - you can take an old wooden frame and place the sheet in there and it looks gorgeous and is safe for your animals.
Flexible Mirror Sheets Self Adhesive Non Glass Mirror Tiles Mirror Stickers for Home Wall Décor (4 Pieces,12 x 12 Inches)
ZONON - $10.59
G. Some coops made of wood might expand depending on the climate so when decorating keep that in mind. However, painting the wood would make a great difference and safes some funds. Just get a nice bright color that pleases everybody and use non-toxic paint! The one below is a nice neutral color bright and alive that matches with everything and is not too hot in the summer.
Interior/Exterior Eco-Friendly Paint, Navajo White, Semi Gloss, 1 Gallon
Montage Signature - $23.45
H. I love urns, they could be used for beautiful flowers outside in front of the coop on each side or for a feeding container where the food will stay cleaner and the chickens have a different experience having to fly up to their treats or feed.
The photo below is only for the tree, but you get the idea how pretty a coop can look when everything comes together nicely right?

Of course the color has to match the coop, if too gray for your taste just paint the urns as I did in any color you like and matches your other decorations.

THE DESIGN TUSCONY STORE - $769.50
It would be much easier to paint the urns than the coop, just saying.
I. Wallpaper, I love wallpaper in my house, however, in a coop - no so sure it is a great idea in the Florida heat and damp everyday, the insects will love the glue and paper in no time, yes it looks pretty, but is it a good idea? Rather use a coat of paint and stencil some motives you and your chickens will love. If you live up north it will be a different story all together. But if you wish you could always use something like contact paper or perhaps liner that is easy to keep clean.

J. Flooring, in my coop it was just sand, it was a stone old little greenhouse with a sand floor, so my husband build a floor with plywood, a good job, but it leaked and now its a bit wobbly, we fixed the roof and put a vinyl flooring that looks really pretty like bricks, so cool. It is very functional, but you can't use anything sharp to clean of the poop or you will cut the vinyl, so in hind side I would not suggest it. So learn from my experience and use something easy like concrete that is totally smooth, if you can afford it use resin with a cool design you like under it, or tiles without grout you have to clean, or those artificial wood tiles that you can just slide together and make it a smooth finish, that is what you want to safe you work.
