If you wish to keep your chickens safe, you need humane animal traps (see the link at the end), an un-impenetrable fence system, and the nocturnal animal repellents. I was thinking about trying those ultrasonic ones, but if it bathers birds etc. it bathers my chickens so I kind of stay away from those.
So I think that a combination of things should keep our flock safe. Yes all together is a bundle of greens, but in the long run safes a ton of heartbreaks, and even money because you don't have to buy feed for 34 chicks you hatched yourself and feed them for 3-4 months only to be eaten by raccoons.
The electricity for the incubator and heating pad, the brooder bedding constantly changing, the Corid, the vitamins, the probiotics, all cost money which is wasted if we didn't protect them from those vicious predators of there are plenty, believe me.
So here are a few which I found work best for us. The Solar is so easy no work whatsoever and the cost is minor in comparison of raising the chicks and losing them.
I change them around occasionally, so if a predator returns don't see the eyes in the same spot and learns it is not a real enemy. Predators are smart creatures and learn to adopt fast. So we got to be one step ahead of them at all times.
