Many times in the last few years we have lost our precious chickens and ducks by raccoons, rats, and Hawks, although there are many other predators out there I will show you some photos of. The only way to protect your pets is truly to get rid of the problem in the first place.
You can put up fences from top to bottom in your run, but they dig their way underneath, you can put fences in the ground, they will startle the little ones and so they all run into one corner and try to escape through the chicken wire and get their head bitten off.
Every time I think of that picture seeing a dozen pullets with their head bitten off I love my husband even more for getting me that animal trap and a nice big one too, as well as tons of glue traps and rat traps, and smaller wire so that the chicks can't stick their head through any longer.
We actually caught a raccoon in the trap and released it many, many miles away, however, another raccoon was caught by my husband one evening already getting dark, when my phone rang and my husband said come outside quickly upfront. So I ran outside and I saw him kicking a raccoon with my Blacky, an Australorp in its mouth 12 feet over the fence. Thank goodness the raccoon let go of the chicken and she was right inside the fence line motionless, no peep. So I gently picked her up and put her inside overnight, I checked her first and she had no visible bloody injuries. I released her the next day and she has been fine ever since, but if it wasn't for my husband's quick reaction I would have lost her forever and wandered where she might be.
Another time we were both sitting on a chair in the backyard and this Hawk comes landing on the ground, walking a couple of steps and snatching one of my chicks and flew through the trees and large branches, when Hawks are supposedly not doing that. All happened in 2 seconds boom it was over and my chick gone.
So, from the bottom of my heart, to save you from all the heartbreak I recommend to catch the critters before something happens! Mark my word! May I suggest to get a nice big one if you live in wild dog and coyote country and a small one for the rats. Be aware that snakes love baby chicks as well, a friend of mine lost 8 chicks in a single night with one snake that was too fat to get back out the next morning.
