As usually, I was sitting on my chair in the backyard and noticed my poor little Leggy, a Leghorn, limping around and her comb was kind of pinkish, so I picked her up and put her on my lap and oh my goodness, she had a purple bump in between her toes on both feet.

We all suffer from time to time from an ailment or another and we know how to deal with it most of the time, but when it comes to our children or beloved pets forget about it, we lose it if we are honest.

So, I did some research in the chicken groups, I subscribe to seeking how they dealt with Bumblefoot, and I share how I successfully deal with Bumblefoot now with you for your consideration. There are few vets that treat chickens, so when you are searching for answers, I am here to help you find them.

BUMBLEFOOT

If your chicken or rooster has a swollen foot sometimes on multiple places between the toes and is perhaps purplish and it shows a black spot on the bottom of the foot, it may have Bumblefoot and can be taken care of at your home. So no worries, just play nurse for a few days and all will be well.

How to treat Bumblefoot

Tip:  Take a picture of the feet before the treatment so that you can see the difference later on.

Warning:  Must wear gloves - Bumblefoot is a staff infection!

Tip:  Disinfect everything before and definitely after! Dispose of all items used, remember your clothing, if her feet touched it, wash immediately.

Step 1.  Prepare a large bowl with warm water and dissolve a cup of Epsom Salt with a few drops of well shaken warmed up VetRX in it.

Step 2. Soak both feet of your sick chicken in a container such as a 5 gal bucket or any other container a chicken can fit in. I used different ones and I found one to sit on the couch watching a movie while the chicken is standing or sitting in the water and holding Leggy with a towel over her upper body works the best.  This way she stays calmer and you can feed her some treats to make the whole process easier.

Step 3.  Hold her for 30 minutes, have the towel ready to protect from the nails. Dry her off well, you can even use the blow-dryer.

Step 4. Cut the vet wrap in half because it is too wide to go between the toes about 12 inches long or two six inch pieces.

Step 5. Once her feet are dry apply the PRID to the pad or a tiny piece of folded paper towel (you can even cut it round - make sure its even so it doesn't poke her) and put on her black spot on the bottom of the foot or spray Vetericyn directly on the black spot.

Step 6. Now apply the wrap all around the wound and in between the toes, remember she has either 4 or Silkies have 5, avoid taping one toe in and not too tight.

Step 7. She is done and deserves a treat. You can let her out now just let her down easy because it feels funny, like she's earing shoes at first.

Step 8. Repeat every day for 3 to 4 days and see that the top swelling is gone and the black spot is just about gone, after last soaking in the Epsom Salt you can just wipe out the black or now beige/brown spot with a paper towel (remember its still staff infectious).  Disinfect well and wrap one last time. Hopefully!

The following products are exactly what I used to treat my Leggy's Bumblefoot. But our tape was used up rather quickly and it gets wet and dirty very easily so my husband couldn't find the same one again so he brought home a different kind, called Nexcare, and it works even better. It doesn't get dirty and it stays dry. However, I still cut it in half to make it fit properly and is less bothersome to the injured chicken.
