Most people seem to be afraid of roosters until they meet them and learn oh my goodness it can be true, you might have a reason to be scared. When I began keeping chickens I was told I have all hens, but it turns out there were 7 roosters, and one was a miniature one and one bantam, boy did they sucker me in. But experienced and wiser learned that not all roosters are scary and mean, some are sweeter than honey, very lovable and protective of their hens.
One of my roosters was a Barred Rock, when he was 3 months old he disappeared and 3 months later he returned fully grown and as beautiful as can be! Huge and gorgeous, but extremely shy and hungry. He was the lowest ranking after his return, which is natural.
Then one of my other roosters a dream of an Easter Egger I named Plimmy, because they told me it was a Plymouth Rock, ha ha ha, was so extremely happy with him and we was like pure sugar, he was rooster number one, we kept the other six in a separate run. One day as I was hand feeding the flock with treats he out of the blue attacked me and put my right calve between his two spurs. Holy dolido, the pain was something. From this point forward I read up all there is to know about roosters and I put him on the ground and held him for 30 seconds and head down and he wasn't moving an inch. After that I had no more problems!
However, I hear so many stories on my groups I am part of that roosters are continuously attacking, the key is protection of course. First the whole family has to do so and hold him down, if it doesn't work the first time do it again.
Now its time to protect him from himself and other roosters, as well as the whole family with some of the ideas from fighting roosters and common sense stuff you will find below. Pretty cool things.
